For West 8 city and landscape are intimately related in their cultural context. The construction of a narrative based on this understanding is capable of awakening all actors, all aspects of their identity to create a project which can spark dialogue and uses their self-image as a means of establishing their relationship with the landscape. West 8′s work addresses the challenges beyond just sustainable development but to broader issues of identity, urbanism, culture and resiliency. Nowhere is this best exemplified than at Governors Island in New York, where West 8 is leading the transformation of this former military base into a world-class destination.

For the New Presidio Parklands Project, it is the intention of West 8 not to create a fixed “image,” but to provide a flexible approach with a series of explorations and opportunities that can inform the collective vision of this critical capstone of the Presidio.
